I am putting together a four day boys trip for the cigar deck lads and any of the interstate/international lads who attended the wedding.

Once an annual event, we haven't done a "boys trip" for a couple of years. Covid put us out of stride.  We have had many a memorable one from cigar flyfishing and pigshooting tours to "lux" weekends in major cities in Asia and Oz  🙄

There are a couple of rules.

1.   Must be cigar friendly.

2.   4 days only. Must be easily reachable in half a day.

3.   No wives or girlfriends. * we love our wives/girlfriends but on a boys trip it can change the dynamic.

4.   Good food and wine.

The lads are getting a touch older so some of our past exploits (dirt bikes in the wilds of the north with complete glamping crew) are out. Not everyone enjoys fishing or golf ....so that is out for this type of trip.

I will do this one in Hong Kong. Ravi will arrange the lunch/dinner schedule as it is his home town. I will arrange access to the PCC private lounges as well as a few other private lounges that I know. Shagga can arrange the night time entertainment schedule.....that in itself is frightening :lookaround:

HK ticks all the boxes for us this time around ;)

What are your "Boys Trip Away"  favourite destinations?  :D

Now that sounds fun. Singapore is also great. Miner Joker Oz Cuban and myself went to Bali that was incredible.  I think Thailand would be totally awesome as well and of course Brisbane will always be in our hearts 😎🌴

Yes Bangkok is a great spot for a lads trip. Can tick all the boxes there.

Regardless of the location, I’ve found that a fun attitude goes a long way toward having fun with ‘the boys’.  Trying to avoid the hard no’s, and embrace the ‘sure, let’s try it’ keeps the whole trip fun.  Staying loose keeps you open to the random situations that end up being the parts of the trip you talk about years down the road.

Based on your criteria, I’d go with:

Atlanta

St. Augustine/Tampa/Miami/Keys

Madrid

For the US, Las Vegas had been the default.  Last 5+ years it's not what it use to be.  Not sure where obvious choice would be.

Sounding like a broken record; Montreal.

RTJ trail in Alabama, ideally Fairhope.

Kiawah SC

We recently did a dive bar Nashville one that was fun and nowhere near Broadway.

My first thought was Vegas. I've done it both ways; staying in great rooms with golf at the Wynn to slumming it at the golden nugget and tromping around 'old Vegas'.

Both fun, and both are things I don't think I could do for much more than 4 days.

I sure agree with you here.  I used to hit Vegas twice a year and loved it.  On our last few trips, it just wasn't the same.  Dealers are grouches, casinos are basically public sidewalks now, and it's just not as fun to gamble as it used to be.

Great question. A great boys trip is more about the company than the destination imo. So wherever you go, just make sure that access to wifi/phones is eliminated or minimized, either by agreement or necessity. It's so much better when everyone puts their phones down.... maybe charter a large catamaran and just island hop for a few days.

I fly in/out of Sosua quite a bit as my wife’s family has a house just to the east of Playa Sosua. It is beautiful, but it is hilarious how many older American men traveling alone are on that flight as Sosua is literally crawling with women “working”. First class on the AA flight from Miami is virtually full of single older men. It is also a guaranteed upgrade if you have decent status on AA. Any time I sit next to them I always strike up a conversation, usually something like:

Me: so is this your first trip to DR?

Them: No this is actually my 15th trip to Sosua.

Me: Wow 15 times you must REALLY like Sosua! What is it you like so much?

Them: the beaches, the food.

Me: the beaches are nice…have you ever driven out to Samana to the east the beaches are probably the most beautiful in DR?

Them: Nah I just stick to Downtown Sosua.

Me: And food, huh. Which restaurants do you recommend in town? Sosua is not exactly Saint Barts!

Them: to be honest, the ones crawling with girls.

Me: yeah makes sense.

no, the big ass trout win!!

most of these places take about a day and half to get to so if limited to four days, there and back means a day, may be two. even crossing to NZ takes a full day with the airline timings and time difference etc. coming home, you can catch an early flight which will get you back in time for work that day.

some of those fishing lodges have brilliant chefs and great cellars. and, excusing the sandflies, great places for a balcony or outdoor cigar. i would always take an SLR DC with me (and a few others) when fishing, swearing that if i caught a biggie, i would then sit on the bank and contemplate the world from one of the most beautiful places on the planet. problem is that whenever you get a good fish, you just want to chase the next one asap. always had to wait until the day's fishing was over.

the best lodge used to be lake rotoroa lodge. unbelievable. you'd arrive and the aussie flag would be flying, they'd be at the entrance with your favourite drink. the chef was world class. the rooms were incredible (heated floors for that midnight leak). sadly, it was sold to 'private' interests. but there are others.

i would be seriously keen on this!

a perfect trial run for the foh Caribbean rum and fishing tour.

I’ve done Vegas too many times and too many ways. Most of my boys trips have been around golf. Love Cabo for that now too. Most of my boys trips these days are four wheeling and sometimes camping in the mountains and forests of Northern California and sometimes includes wives too! Sometimes Colorado and Utah too!

My most memorable lads trips have been to small / rural Irish towns. The type where there is one pub, one post office, an undertakers and not much else (sometimes they’re all the same place believe it or not). But the pub is really welcoming and the stout is something to write home about. The food is mediocre but it doesn’t matter. Smoking laws are difficult but only until midnight. And they’ll let you bring instruments (most of us play something). You’d go three days without contacting anyone outside the group and leave with memories to last a lifetime.

A few days in HK is entertaining, but a Junket in Macau is far more fun.
